Third week – Richie adjusting well at home

Richie has started adjusting well at home. He is drinking milk well and takes short naps. The best part is that he turns in the direction of my voice, even when I am not in sight and becomes happy when he sees me. It is such a great feeling that he recognizes his mom's voice. It is just the third week and he has already achieved one milestone. He likes to listen to the rattle and the squeaking toys sounds. He also has a liking for musical toys, specially the one hanging above his bed.

But there are sounds which disturb him a lot. He gets up startled with loud noises, like the vacuum cleaner, mixer, washing machine etc..Even the sound of plastic bags disturbs him. I guess it is good in one way. He is aware of his surroundings and is very alert and shows a great deal of interest in the things happening around him.

He got a little nappy rash and was throwing up a little. He also got a sore throat and was making sounds as if clearing his throat. As I was new to all this I got a little scared. We took him to the doctor. The doctor told us not to worry and gave medicines. Richie was happy to take a ride outside in the fresh air and same with me. :)I had not gone out for the past 2 weeks after coming home from hospital and it was a welcome change.

Second week - Baby's first year of life

Richie and I came home. He is such a sweet lil child, just like an angel. We were given a nice welcome with the place decorated with balloons and “WELCOME HOME ” wordings. We made his bed and Richie was ready to be tucked up in his bed. But it was all not so easy. It took a while for him to get adjusted to the new surroundings and for me to get use to the new routine. First day first show, Richie got up in the nights for his feed and he would not sleep as he felt gassy. I held him and rocked him for a long time singing lullabies. I really wonder from where mothers get the strength. I used to hardly sleep, but nature makes us so strong that we can withstand anything. We established a routine for him of bath, feed, sleep etc. He used to sleep a lot in the day, waking up every 2-3 hours for feeds. This went on for many days.
The best time was when Richie gave his first smile. I was holding him when he was asleep and when I touched his forehead, he gave a cute smile. It seems little children are so pure that they can God and angels. Maybe he was playing and enjoying with them.:)

First week - Baby's first year of life

I thought of creating a series of baby's first year of life blogs. This will contain in brief, all the wonderful milestones baby has accomplished and is accomplishing... This is how I can track his progress and feel proud of his achievements. So one day, we both can read it together.:)

After delivery, Richie was brought to me. He weighed around 3024 gms and measured about 47.2 cms. I held my sweetie pie close to my heart and was lost in my dreamworld. The feeling was great. :)I guess it was mutual.Richie spent most of the first week in the hospital under the watchful eyes of the doctors and mid-wives.As kids, we used to play with dolls, feeding them, bathing them etc. And today here I was, holding a live soul, who was solely dependent on me for everything.
The mid-wives took care of his feeding and change of nappies etc. on the first day as I was tired. He was given bottle milk that night. My hubby stayed back at the hospital.
I was waiting eagerly to hold my baby again. The next day we woke early and went to the babies room. The mid-wife brought our baby to us. He was sleeping soundly, tucked up in a warm blanket. We were proud parents of a beautiful baby boy and we let the feeling to sink-in. We could not help admiring our own creation and just kept watching him for a long time.
The next few days went fast. Everyday Richie and I had checkups. Then I had sessions on how to take care of the newborn, feeding, bathing etc. Richie used to be with me most of the time. The toughest thing for me that time was burping. Silly right? But yes, I was not able to burp him and he used to throw out a lil later. I was afraid that he was not having enough. Doctors and parents advised me that throwing up is just normal and there is no need to worry. The hospital stay was good, interacting with other moms and sharing each others experiences.
I still remember how once I got shivers down my spine thinking of whether I will be able to take care of my baby well. But I maintained a positive attitude and boosted my self confidence saying that we can do everything very easily. Nothing is difficult in this world if we maintain a positive outlook.

Do babies understand music?

The other day I thought I would show my baby what a guitar was and how it was played. He was around 2 months old. Actually I don’t know how to play it. But I thought to myself ”No worries, what will a baby understand? He just needs some sound”.:) I got the red Fender and showed it to my baby and started strumming the guitar with whatever I knew. He was happy to see it, but just turned away when I started playing it. I was a bit sad, wondering why my baby is not showing any interest.

Now my dear hubby who knows to play the chords came over. He was like, hmmm.. is it that he doesn’t like music or was it Mama not doing the right thing? He decided to give a try. And to our surprise baby started watching him and listening to him intently. He was giggling and throwing his hands and legs in the air hearing the songs. Whenever my hubby stopped he used to make sounds saying “I want more, I want more”. Oooops.. do babies know what is music? I was totally astonished looking at him. Never underestimate your baby. He may be keeping quiet, but he is listening to every word you say and every action you do. They are voracious learners.
